Game Idea
(Recreation of super meat boy put into a more mechanical
setting as you play as a tiny bot escaping a rundown facility/factory. This will
be a level-by-level platformer game where you have to cross different obstacles
to get to the end of the level. Each level will have a rating score of how well
you completed it, this will be done by spreading 3 bolts out into the level for
the player to capture.)
Introduction:
this blog post is a review of my GameJam to go over what happened during the week.
The purpose of this blog is so that I can recap and analyze what I did.
Section 1: Recreating the Classroom in Unreal
Before going to Unreal engine we measured out most of the classroom so that we had real word measurements that we could work with and make sure most things were proportional to each other.
The biggest challenge I faced during the recreation of the class was probably the time constraint, other than this the only difficulty I had was reminding myself how to use the software that I was using.
During this I learned to talk between people in a group setting and passing on information, I also learned more of 3dmax and way to import and export to Unreal.
Section 2: Game Jam Participation
In the GameJam we decided on making a 2D platformer game as it one of the easier genres of game to make under our time given for the task. My experience of the Task was overall pretty good and I was the Programmer/Code game engine side of the group.
For the game I made all of the code and functionality for the game while others did art and level concept designs and title page designs. I also did some of the level design for the later levels also.
The main challenge I faced during the GameJam was the wall-jumping mechanic, detection of objects in-front of the player, and making the camera not flip when the player changes direction.
Section 3: Reflection on the Learning Process
This has made me more knowledgeable of games development and the process of making games with Unreal Engine. With both of these activities I have been enlightened of the teamwork side of games as my last projects making games was a solo task.
One of the most valuable lessons I have learnt is making lists to divvy up the work and have a visual aid of what needs to be done and then adding onto the needs with what can be added.
Section 4: Suggestions for Improvements
What could have been done better?
Recreating classroom: We could have added more models with the time we had free to fill up the classroom more. With this time we could have made the room more interactable also.
GameJam: Some of the animations were a little barebones, with more time we could have made them somewhat better. We could have also decorated the levels a bit more in the background if we had made individual sprites that I could have imported into the designated levels.
To enhance future GameJams I would say for people to try and not make 2D platformers as it forces people out of their comfort zones as that is most of what we have been taught up until this point in time.
In the future we could branch out with different game styles for more versatility.
Conclusion:
the significance of these tasks is that it has renewed my knowledge of both 3dmax and Unreal Engine, allowing me to build off of my already existing knowhow of the systems and softwares.
This has excited me for the rest of the college year to enhance my abilities and hone into one of the sectors of development (i.e. Programming)
By the end of the year I hope to have the knowhow of how to join a games company or start my own and also learn the basic principles of coding as an extension of the flowchart engine making that we have been doing currently.
